Becoming a KanCare Dental Provider–Steps and Benefits

More than 400,000 Kansans get their health and dental insurance through KanCare, which is the Kansas Medicaid program. But fewer than one-third of Kansas dentists are enrolled in the program. As a result, many Kansans–especially those in rural areas– struggle to find a provider.

You can grow your practice and make a positive impact on the lives of your fellow Kansans by signing up for KanCare. So, how do you become a KanCare dental provider?

Step 1: Start the Application

Visit the Kansas Medical Assistance Program (KMAP) website: https://portal.kmap-state-ks.us/ProviderEnrollment/EnrollmentCreate
At the bottom of that webpage you’ll find an enrollment pre-checklist, with instructions. It includes a brief series of questions, such as:

  •   Enrollment type
    •  Group
    • Individual
    • Individual within a group
    • Provider type
    • Dentist
  •  I will accept patients in the following programs*
    • FFS Only
    • MCO
    • FFS and MCO

*Note: KanCare coverage is provided through three Managed Care Organizations (MCOs): Sunflower Health Plan, Healthy Blue, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Dental offices can work with any or all of them. To serve KanCare patients, you’ll need to select an option that includes MCO.

Click “Generate Pre-Checklist” to receive a customized list of everything you’ll need for your enrollment application.

Step 2: Submit Documents
You will need to send documents from your pre-checklist, like your license, insurance papers, and a Tax ID number.

Step 3: Complete and submit the application.

The Enrollment Wizard allows you to submit a single application to be shared with all selected MCOs.

Important: If you do not sign up with at least one of the MCOs, you will be considered an out-of-network provider.

Once KDHE’s Division of Health Care Finance has approved your application, you’ll receive a KMAP provider ID number. Your application and associated documents will be shared with your selected MCOs. Each of them will confirm your credentials and negotiate a contract with you. Once that contract is approved, you’re ready to welcome KanCare members to your clientele!
